Kenyatta University became a fully-fledged university in 1985 having been a college and a university college since 1965. The University is the second oldest public university in Kenya. Students hails from diverse backgrounds both locally and internationally. The university offers various degree programs in almost all fields. The university is home to the Chandaria Business, Innovation and Incubation Centre, where young entrepreneurs from all over Africa with innovative projects are nurtured to scale up their ideas into viable spin-off companies.

The School of Environmental Studies at Kenyatta University is the oldest Environmental School in Kenya offering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.  The School is home to some of the world’s top environmental scholars, researchers and experts in diverse fields. The School gives guidance to the government and Non-Governmental Organizations on all matters relating to the environment. It has the highest concentration of Environmental professionals in East Africa with more than 35 members of teaching staff having PhDs while 12 have Masters degrees. The school hosts the Regional Centre of Excellence for Greater Nairobi of the United Nations University. It has also been identified and recognized by DAAD to offer Masters and Ph.D. programs. To address the environmental needs of the world and Kenya in particular, the school of Environmental Studies offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs currently are Environmental Science, Environmental Studies (Agroforestry and Rural Development), Environmental Planning and Management, Environmental Studies and Community Development, Climate Change and Sustainability and Environmental Education.
